Why do we need a human baby?

Either LaMDA is sentient, in which case we have a new person, and people do not need to be needed. People are of value if they cannot work, people are of value if they cannot communicate normally.

Or LaMDA is not sentient and we have still discovered some things about the nature of consciousness and the limits of AI that might be useful.
