Why I’m Not Taking Off My Mask Just Yet

COVID numbers have dropped. Not only is the omicron surge over in the United States, but the latest seven day moving average per Worldometers is 63,506. The last time it was that low was July 26, 2021, a bit into the Delta surge. And it’s still trending downward.

Mask mandates are being thrown away left, right, and center. My landlords are no longer encouraging me to wear a mask just to leave my apartment. So, why am I still wearing a mask? Several reasons.

There’s Still a Lot of COVID Out There

63,000 cases a day only looks good when compared to the ridiculous surge we just had. It’s close to the peak of the summer 2020 wave…recall thinking that was pretty high?

Yeah.

The numbers are dropping, but they aren’t yet low enough. While it’s true raw case numbers are way less important than they were, with many more asymptomatic cases and a lot of people vaccinated (I live in a highly vaccinated area), I still want to see them come down slightly further.

And I want to see them stay down.

I worry we’re all going to take off our masks and there will be another surge.
